The festive season means four things to us at SCARS; fireworks and storms, heat, holidays and hopefully loads of adoptions!
Being a responsible pet owner in the festive season means making sure your animals are safe during storms and fireworks, secure fencing and a safe place inside to shelter, make sure they have lots of water and shade available in the heat too. Use simple ways to keep them cool; don't walk dogs in the heat of the day and use ice in water bowls to help them keep cool. Make sure your beloved pet is looked after if you are going away, book boarding kennels early or look into qualified pet sitters if you have missed out on a place to board them. If you are holidaying at home and having lots of visitors, make sure your pets have some quiet time away from all of the festive cheer! And make sure they are not eating our christmassy treats.
Our most important message is probably....if you are considering adding a four legged friend to your family, please do RESCUE and ADOPT! Do your research though and don't buy puppies and kittens as gifts for people unless you are really sure they want one. we prefer that people pick their own cat or dog. After all its a big commitment; cats and dogs can live a long time! so do your research and save an animal that suits your lifestyle, exercise tolerance, your family and your kids, where you live and know the cost of keeping them safe and healthy.
We have so many gorgeous adult cats at the moment. Carissa has been with us since Feb 2016 and would so love a home to go to for Christmas! Many wonderful adopters shared their homes with our cats and kittens this year. Amazon and Lillian come to mind as two who had a rough start with complicated vet procedures and loads of love and cuddles whilst they waited to be ready to be available to rehome!
Our foster program for mother cats and kittens has continued to be a "life saver" literally! Although we are pleased to say that it appears just that little bit quieter on the kitten front this year ...so far anyway. Plans for the cattery in the new future include replacement and repair of the outdoor run area for Run 1 in the cattery and lots more enrichment activities.
Watch this space as we are profiling some of our kitty cats for the 12 strays of Christmas!
Its been a bit of a slow year for dog adoptions.....However we would be remiss to not be excited about some wonderful rehomings of a couple of our long term dogs, like Carson and Layla. Many others have found their forever homes this year as well. Our goal for the last few months has been to find Wombat a home before Christmas. Wombat is a sweet hearted but strong willed 4 year old girl who has lived in shelter environments for three years now! She would really like to be the only pet, is house trained and has good basic obedience. Know anyone who needs a loyal companion??
On another exciting note we are currently completing our internal walking track for our dogs. This will be a great space that provides the dogs and our volunteers with an area to relax and provide enrichment for the dogs on a one to one basis. We are also fitting out our "education" room as comfy lounge space where the dogs can be taken for a 'chill out' time and also for potential adopters to view them in home like surrounds. Some exciting happenings for the doggies.
Santa Paws was a wonderful success again this year with over 70 families bringing their pets out to sit on Santa's lap!
A wonderful day and so lovely to see old and new friends and ex SCARS cats and dogs. Everyone and their fur babies looked very loved and spoilt. A massive THANKS to Trudy, our volunteer photographer, who makes the best Santa photos on the Sunny Coast. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped on the day to keep things running smoothly and kept our visitors fed and watered. We look forward to seeing you all again at the next Santa Paws day in 2017.

Reflections from SCARS volunteer visiting the Nursing Homes with Maggie the Silky Terrier and Ziggie the Labrador
What an eventful day.
So many smiling faces
Gnarled hands reaching out to pat the soft hair of our two visiting dogs
Some residents recognised our “Maggie” and called to her
After patting our beautiful Ziggie one gentleman was encouraged to tell us (via his communication board) of his many fishing adventures, a far cry from the quiet reticent man the staff sees each day
The memory loss residents really take part in ball throwing up and down the corridors which Maggie loves and just talking to the dogs.
We move from area to area connecting with each resident and offering a pat and cuddles with our lovely dogs. Even one lady lying in a bed that we had been told would not respond, spotted our dogs and immediately sat up to pat them and to chat with us
We look forward to visiting the two Residential Care Units each month and we hope the residents have some of the happy memories we have shared. Certainly when we talk to some of them they talk about loving memories of dogs in their lives
Maggie and Ziggie go home with tails wagging having done a great job of licking, sitting for treats and being hugged and patted- what a hard life they have!! And we the volunteers head home with a smile and a glow in our hearts.
A great month of adoptions for dogs so far, with the long termers Hector, Hayley , Sandy and Apache finding homes. Hayley went off to live in a “share house “ situation. This is what Hayley does best, help be a companion for these guys. Sadly Hayley’s last “share home” situation was sold up and the residents moved to different places, this then meant Hayley had to come and live in the refuge, so we now have one very happy girl! And early reports suggest she is ‘lapping’ up all the attention. A great end of year story.
The puppies have finally been finding homes and we only have one left which is great news!
Lot’s of lovely donations coming in for the dogs for Christmas which is brilliant and all of our dogs on the SCARS wishing tree have pressies under the tree waiting for Christmas morning.
Santa Paws was a wonderful success this year again! Santa was photographed with over 70 dogs, cats and this year we did our first Santa Paws (hooves) photos!! A wonderful day and lovely to see old friends and families that have adopted from SCARS. All their fur babies looked very loved and spoilt. A massive thanks to Trudy, our volunteer photographer, who makes the best Santa paws photos on the Sunny Coast. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped out on the day. Looking forward to seeing you all again next Santa Paws day in 2016.
We have a huge amount of cats both in and out of the refuge at the moment, lot’s for adoption and many more out in foster care. As we are having difficulty re-homing enough adult cats, we have a promotion for the month of December, “One cat wonders” adult cats for only $69 to adopt. Let’s hope this helps to re-home plenty of adult cats, in order to help us intake some more in need of help. So far this month we re-homed 25 kittens and cats, mostly kittens, but there have a been a few lucky cats as well. We hope some of the more longer term cats may be adopted before the end of December, fingers crossed!
We still have 5 of our cats waiting patiently for Christmas pressies under the SCARS wishing tree – Hector, Wiley and Stevie to name a few…
Remember our Cat Desex in the City campaign is ongoing now. Purchase a voucher for $69. Tell your friends. Click here to find out more.
